Throwing Kids at Rocks

This year for my internship I work for a small non-profit in Denver that endeavors to expose low-income minority youth to the traditionally exclusive world of outdoors experiential learning.  Typical activities that we involve our students in are snowboarding, whitewater rafting, backpacking, and cycling.  In addition, this year the organization has made a concerted effort to expose our students to the world of rock-climbing.  As part of this effort, we recently took a group of students to the largest climbing gym in the United States, which happens to be in Boulder, Colorado.  Our students were able to access to the facilities for free and climb in the midst of some of the top rock-climbers in the country.  Our students spent the day throwing themselves at various climbing routes with the guidance of veteran gym employees.  We hope to continue our relationship with the gym and allow more of our students to experience the world of rock-climbing over the next few months.
